Over the last few days, America, and especially the east coast, has been on high alert, with the coming of hurricane Florence. People have been literally running for cover because of the unknown damage and destruction she is preparing. Many, many people have taken to the highways and left everything behind, because they want to be smart and realizing that “things” can be replaced, but life cannot. Some however, have chosen to ride it out. Believing that they can weather the storm and come out on the other side okay.
As I watch this all unfolding, there is certainly a sense of trepidation in me as much as anyone. But I am reminded of what the Lord tells us. He is the creator of all things and in Him all things hold together (My paraphrase of Colossians 1:16-17). And in Him there is no darkness at all (1 John 1:5). He says we have no need to worry or be afraid (John 14:1, 27). Those truths from our Lord, give great peace from the One who is the Prince of Peace (Eph 2:14). Specifically, that means, no matter what storms may come in life, Jesus is always able to care for us and keep us safe. Mind you, the Lord is not talking about physical safety, necessarily, but specifically spiritual safety. In other words, the Lord has promised that all who are in this life, who put their trust in Him will never have to be afraid of the storms that come. We never need to be afraid of them in this life and in the life to come. We are to be wise (Matthew 10:16), but ever trusting Him. He has promised to meet every need (Philippians 4:19) according to His riches.
Perhaps you are struggling, with not just Florence and the potential devastation she may bring, but the storms of fear and doubt about your life. Maybe you are on the raging sea of confusion of what to do about a particular subject or situation. Maybe you are looking at a terrible illness in you or a loved one. Maybe death has taken your spouse or someone close to you and you are feeling like a small boat in the midst of a hurricane of life. Take courage, the Captain of you life, Jesus Christ, will help you through. Jesus said, I will never leave you or forsake you (Hebrews 13:5).
When all things and people around you are tossing you around. Keep your eyes on the One who can weather any storm. He came to make sure we were anchored solidly in Him and has every intention to get us to the life to come. Where there will be no more crying, no more death, no more pain (Revelation 21:4). He has said, John 16:33 (NASB) 33 “These things I have spoken to you, so that in Me you may have peace. In the world you have tribulation, but take courage; I have overcome the world.”
The best thing anyone can do when the storms of life are flying all around is, put their trust in Jesus and lean on Him through everything. He came to rescue us from the clutches of darkness, Satan Himself (Colossians 1:13). And to give us an eternal home with Him. Also, to stay settled when the storms are raging spiritually, it is always best to obey the Lord and be connected to a faithful, Bible preaching, Bible believing church. Where there are others who will help hold you up and pray for you.
As the storm approaches, make sure you are looking to Him.
